Living alone: renting a studio costs twice as much as renting a room

And when it is time to look for a house to live in on your own, you have to make your choices according to your budget, which has become tighter due to the high inflation that is being felt in Portugal. Among the options on the table may be to rent a studio or to rent a room in a shared house. But the difference in price between the two can be significant for some wallets, and the privacy of a studio ends up being twice as expensive, shows a study by Idealista.

The average rent for a one-bedroom in Portugal in October stood at 310 euros, compared to the 625 euros needed to rent a studio, i.e. 102% more expensive, the same study shows. Both real estate products have become more expensive over the last three years, although growth has been more intense in the case of rooms (which became 32% more expensive) than studios (with a 14% increase).

Looking at the market in each district capital, it´s clear that the biggest difference in price between rooms and studios is in Funchal, where studios are 160% more expensive. This is followed by Faro (125% more expensive), Santarém (123%), Castelo Branco (100%), Setúbal (93%), Vila Real (92%), Aveiro (92%), Lisbon (86%) and Braga (82%). The smallest price differences are found in Coimbra (studios are only 33% more expensive than rooms), Porto (63%) and Leiria (65%).
